LEVIN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Levin Chamber of Commerce was held on Thursday evening in the Whakatane Club room, the President' (Mr E. IS. Crisp) being in the chair. Copies were received from the Wellington Harb'ouv Board of an abridged summary of the Board's principal charges, with the latest reductions. The circulars .will be kept at the office of the secretary of the Chamber (Mr F. P. Walkley), where they may be inspected by those interested. ■PUBLIC SERVICE SUPERANNUATION FUND. Information as to the proceedings at the Associated Chambers of Commerce meeting was received from the executive of that body. In referring to, the discussion which had there taken place on the Government service •superannuation fund, the chairman expressed the opinion that the fund should be pu£ on an actuarial basis. The fund had been started in the wrong way and hacf got very much behind, so that it would be necessary for the Government to borrow money to subsidise it. Up to the present money had been taken for this purpose out of the Consolidated Fund periodically. On Sir Joseph • Ward's coming into power after the last election, he had pointed out .(.hat the superannuation, fund was two millions short. The speaker did not know on what principle the Government worked, but it should have a representative on the

administration of the fund -from therespective services. Mr S. E. Stedman stated that the Railway Department had a Superannuation Board, of which the members were elected bv the service. ENGLISH MAILS. Another matter discussed I)y the Associated Chambers was that of English mails, it being desired that inward mails should be delivered one day before the outward mails closed.. This, the chairman said, was not always practicable, especially in country towns. UNEMPLOYMENT. The Chairman-remarked that th? executive was keeping an eye on tljeGovernment's taxation scheme for unemployment relief, and was out to protect the taxpayers' interests. APPEAL BY ASSOCIATED CHAMBERS. A circular was received from the Associated Chambers in which, it was stated that their extended activities necessitated (expenditure apart from their 'general jequirements, and the four centres had agreed to underwrite £BOO for this year's work. As something near £IOOO would be required, the Chambers generally were now asked to make contributions towards the special fund, and it was suggested that donations could perhaps be obtained from citizens who were interested in the work. The Chairman said he thought that the Associated Chambers were looking, after everybody's interests to the best best of their ability, but it should be pointed out jto the foody concerned that quite recently this Chamber made a special effort on its own behalf and the response was only just carrying it along. It was : ''decided, on the motion of Mr C. ,S. Kccdwell, seconded by Mr J. D. O'Connor, to write on the lines mentioned by the Chairman and at the same time to express appreciation of the work that the Associated Charr-

bers were doing.
