DISMISSAL FOR ILLNESS.
CALLOUS DEPARTMENTAL CIRCULAR ROUSES IRE. IBy Telefr'* T >h—Pre*«i Association.) AUCKLAND, Last Night. Strong exception has been taken in Auckland to the Post and Telegraph Department's circular instructing the automatic dismissal of casual workers if absent from work from sickness or any cause. Mr Savage, M.P., declared • whoever was "responsible for the circular \va* not fit for his position. Rev. Jasper Calder, social worker, said the circular was iniquitous an-i public opinion would never permit it. Mr Allum, chairman of the Transport Board, said the Department's action was far from humane, especially when other work was so scarce. The circular states that casual employees on day-to-day basis are not now granted leave of absence. Their employment automatically ceases wTien they cease duty on account of sickness or other cause, and they cannot be reengaged. In future when a temporary workman is abfent I'rom duty on account of sickness or other cause except annual leave, approved time off, or absence due to accidents sustained while on duty and approved by tho secretary, he is to be paid off.
