POSTAL INSPECTORS HEAR SOME
RACING NEWS.
TELEGRAPH OPERATORS ON THE MAT.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, This Day. Conversations on the telephone used by the operating staff of the Auckland telegraph office during the Takapunu Jockey Club’s meetings on Saturday and Monday, have resulted in an interrogation of over 40. members of the telegraph staff by two inspectors of the Department, who were summoned from Wellington, The lino was tap ped by laying a wire under the carpelj, and officers of the Department took a note of all conversations bearing on betting or tips. Those who used the telephone were confronted with notes of these conversations.
In some cases the employees concerned have sought legal advice. It is a rule of the Department that any. officer refusing to supply information t) a superior may be suspended.'. Betting conversations on telegraph ’phones by officers on duty are strictly forbidden.
