ENCOURAGEMENT OF FORESTRY.
PRIME MINISTER'S PROMISE TO PRIVATE INTERESTS. COMPANIES' SUBSCRIBED CAPITAL OVER FOUR MILLIONS. (By Telegraph —Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. An assurance that there would be no meddlesome State interference by the present Government with the operations of private afforestation interests, and that there was no intention to apply special taxation to lands devoted to' afforestation, was given by Sir Joseph Ward, Prime Minister, to a deputation from the Timber Growers' Association. The Commissioner of Crown Lands and the Minister of Lands were also present. It was stated that the total subscribed capital of forestry companies to date was £4,125,000 and'there were 110,000 "individual owners, 30,uu0 of whom were in New Zealand. The acreage planted was 44,000. In giving his assurance, Sir Joseph Ward remarked that the forestry industry had developed in a remarkable manner. He hoped that the future operations would be successful, and he thought that there were good prospects. If they wanted the co-opera-tion of the present Government at any time while they were in office, they would be glad to give the fullest consideration to any reports that might be made.
