MERRY MINT FAILS IN DERBY

(Received Sunday, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, Oct. 2

The weather cleared up warm and. sultry when the Australian Jockey Club's Spring meeting- commenced at Randwick. The attendance was

80,000. The course was In good order. The New .Zealand representation was small but classy, though it did not meet with much success. Merry Mint was New Zealand's only starter in the Derby. He was third passing the stand first time behind Maltfern, Chromium and Trivalve. He was among the bunch early but moved up with Winalot going along the back. Coming into the straight Winalot went to the front. Merry Mint seemed to be in a good position and was loudly acclaimed, but Trivalve was forced along v on the outside and beat Winalot by half a neck, with Black Duchess third, two lengths away. Merry Mint was close up fourth. Fifteen horses faced the barrier In the Epsom Handicap. There was a good start except for the muchfavoured Aorangi which was badly left. Fujisan, Vaals and White Fang were the first to show up, but on entering the straight White Fang and Fujisan faded out leaving Vaals to come away and win easily by three lengths. Amounis temporarily showed up passing the St. Leger stand but finished eleventh.

In the Spring: Stakes Limerick always had the race in hand, but McCarten held him back hard in the early stages. The finish was exciting Limerick winning by only a long neck. Pint hair ran a good race and finished fourth. Pilliewinkie was always well back. Results:—

GOTHIC (A. Reed) 9.8 ... . 3 Don Moon was scratched. Pigeon Pie bolted before the race and did not start. Fujisan was first away followed closely by Vaals, White Fang and Cimon. Aorangi was left at the start. White Fang moved up to second behind Fujisan turning out at the back. Entering the straight Vaals shot to the front and had a runaway win heading Mak Siccar by three lengths. Gothic was a neck away third. Time 1.385.

SPRING STAKES, of 2,500 sovs. 12j miles. LIMERICK (McCartcn) 8.11 1 PANTHEON (Pike) 9.6 ... . BACCHUS (Cairns)' 9.2 ... . 3 Eight starters including Piuthair and Pilliewinkie. From a good start Horton Gag immediately took the lead from Pantheon, Limerick and Piuthair. Limerick drew up to second along the back arid led fnto the straight where Pantheon pressed him strongly.. Limerick gained the verdict by a long neck. Time 2.332. KENSINGTON HANDICAP, of 1000 sovs. 7 furlongs. MOTE 8.8 1 MAGDAFF 9.3 2 SPAGHETTI 8.1 3

Twenty-eight starters including Penman, Mars and Arikiwi. Mote was

always handy, came away In the straight and won by a length. Time r. 275. " : HURDLE RACE, of 750 sovs. About 2 miles. BUNGARLEY 9.3 * MOUNTAINEER 9.0 ..... . * PIRATIC 11.6 3 Fifteen starters including Asleep. Really, Castles and Tantaroo made all the early running. Approaching the home turn Royal Howard fell and brought down six other horses. In a close finish Bungarley and Mountaineer past the post together with Piratic four lengths away third. Time 3.43. Asleep pulled up. Jockey M. Webster received severe spinal injuries when Royal Howard fell and was sent to hospital. Four other jockeys were slightly hurt. THE TRIAL STAKES, of 1000 sovs. One mile and a-quarter. BICOLOUR (Jones) S.B . . . . 1 SON O' MINE (Reed) 8.8 . . 2 DEVONSHIRE 8.10 .. 3

Eight starters. Bicolour led into the straight where Son o' Mine came up strongly, but failed to reach the leader by four lengths. Time 2.6 J. A..T.C. DERBY, of 8000 sovs. 1 i miles. TRIVALVE (Lewis) 8.10 .. 1 WINALOT (Davidson) . 8.10 2 BLACK DUCHESS (Cracknell) 8.5 3

All acceptors started except Rosso. A good start was effected and when the field settled down Maltfem and Chromium were leading followed by Merry Mint. Several changes occurred as the leaders were approaching the straight where Winalot seemed to be the winner. Merry Mint also threw out a challenge but Trivalve came up on the outside and wort by half a neck. Black Duchess was two lengths away third. Time 2.35.

COMMENDATION RETURNING (Received Sunday, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, Oct. 2. Commendation has been scratched for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, and leaves for New Zealand on the 14th .
