TARIFF HITS GOLD SEEKERS.
WILL RESTRICT DEVELOPMENT.
(By Teiegranh —Press Association.) HOKITIKA, This Day.
Concern is felt locally for the future, of mining and gold dredging on a large scale by reason of the heavy impost imposed under the amending Customs tariff. The former duty was 10 per cent. British and 15 per cent.’ general. It is now proposed to increase this to 20 per cent. British and 40 per cent, general. It is ascertained that the advance will have the effect of curtailing local expansion. Prospecting has been in progress at Kumara and elsewhere seeking new areas, but it will be quite impossible to install suitable equipment and plants for hard and low-grade ground under the now tariff. Machinery cannot be provided in the Dominion equal to the requirements and plant will have to be imported but the tariff charges proposed are far too high. The local bodies and others are making representations to the Government on the matter.
