IMPROMPTU CIRCUS.
MOTORIST TAKES A TURN IN PUBLIC GARDENS.
BUT LOSES LICENSE FOR SIX
MONTHS
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., This Day. Cancellation of a motor driver’s license for six months and a fine of £lO were the penalties imposed by Justices of the Peace in the Police Court this morning, on William Watson, a traveller, of Wellington, who last evening drove his motor car through a ledge in one of the Square gardens, circled the band rotunda, and then drove out towards the post office. The defendant was charged with having been intoxicated while in charge of a vehicle and with having driven in a negligent manner.
A witness gave evidence that the car missed him by a foot on the footpath. The police sergeant stated that the defendant sobered up after the accident, probably through taking a pick-me-up. A doctor, giving evidence for the defendant, stated that when he was seen at the police-station two hours later, he was in a tit condition to drive a car and able to look after himself. Cross-examined, witness admitted that the defendant could have been drunk two hours previously. The Bench convicted the defendant, imposing the, penalties stated.
