STILL IN DOUBT.
REDUCTION IN TARIFF ON UNASSEMBLED MOTOR BODIES.
(By Telegraph —Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day.
A plea for the promotion of skilled labour in the New Zealand motor-body building industry was made to the Minister of Customs by a deputation representing the Coach 'Workers’ Employees Federation to-day.' They asked for reconsideration of the proposed reduction of five per cent, in the tariff on unassembled motor bodies.
Hon. W. D. Stewart, after explaining that the reduction resulted from representations by the British Trade Commission, said he was extremely doubtful of those whom the deputation ro- ( presented being able to hold their own( against >the unassembled ear people. They must not shut their eyes to world conditions. They should take the view that from the assistance already given them there was no hostile intention on the part of the government/ and .the proposal was not framed at the instigation of Americans, with whom he had had no conversations. The matter was under review, and the question of making a modification of the proposal would be considered.
