The Levin Daily Chronicle WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 1927 LOCAL AND GENERAL

Several dairy companies in North Taranaki have this week sold their output of cheese to the end 'of December at Bgd per lb. On the other hand a number of companies, it is understood, have declined to do business at this figure, but are prepared to put their produce to the December make under firm offer at 9d. Offers of 9d have been made, it is stated, for output to the end of November.

A Wanganui business man accomplished something of a motoring feat during the week-end, by driving to Napier and Gisborne, covering in all a distance of over 600 miles. He left Wanganui early on Saturday morning and his actual time to Gisborne was 12 hours. He was back in Wanganui at 8.80 p.m. on Sunday. The journey was abut the same distance as from Wanganui to Auckland and back, although the class of country through which the route lay was much more precipitous and more difficult to negotiate.

The election of Mr W. J. Eogers as Mayor of Wanganui has raised an interesting point. He is secretary to the local Tramway Employees’ Union, the Gas Works Employees’ Union and the Municipal,, Labourers’ Union, and in view of tlie fact that several questions of ineligibility have been raised recently, he sought an opinion on his position from the city solicitor. The latter stated that it was conceivable that a dispute might arise between the council and its employees, but if ever that did happen Mr Eogers could be relied upon to act in a proper manner. In the meantime, said the Mayor at a recent meeting, he was making arrangements to have the official charge of the unions taken out of his hands.

At a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Levin Y.M.C.A. last evening, it was .decided to close down the activities of the institution until such time as a call is made for their revival. During the past winter useful training has been given to classes of lads and young men in physical culture, but as a similar work is carried on by other organisations, connected with the churches, it has been felt that insufficient scope was left for the Y.M.C.A. to continue such classes.

A diligent sfiareh through the hundred odd pages of the Railway Statement, presented in the House last evening, was rewarded with the following: Palmerston North, New Yard.—This work, not being so urgent as other works in hand, has not yet been tackled on a large scale.; “This is the one and oijly reference to Palmerston’s deviation (says the Palmerston Times). Pages are devoted to Auckland’s palatial new station and Wellington is promised something equally expensive, but Palmerston North can wait!”
