GREAT DEMAND FOR TELEPHONES.
SLOT MACHINES ADVERTISE OTHERS. WELLINGTON, Last Night. A few interesting facts regarding telephone systems were related in the House to-day by Mr. Coates, when speaking of the development of the telephone systems and the number of people on the waiting list, he said these were things controlled by the amount of money at the disposal of the Department. M.r Lee: “Should it not be controlled by the business offering?” Mr. Coatea said that in some of the bigger • centres, where there was considerable business, it had. been decided to alter the system and that used up a lot of money. The program provided for an expenditure of _ £1,000,000 a year for telegraphs and •telephones and the telephone side probably would run into £850,000 to £900,000. It was a huge expenditure for a country like this. It was a good business and paid quite well, returning interest and sinking fund. Mr. Sullivan: “Do slot telephones pay?” Mr. Coates: “Not exactly, but it encourages people to use other telephones. They get sick of the slot telephones, and get machines of their own.” A member: “The slot machines advertise the others?”. Mr. Coates: “Yes,” “Don’t sport with health.”—Jackson., You cannot afford to take chances with your health, especially in chilly weather. Keep ills at bay with Baxter’s Lung Preserver.
