NO WITHDRAWAL.

CHAIRMAN MEANT WHAT HE a\lD. At Saturday’s meeting of tlie Horowhenua County Council, a letter was received from the FoStooi Borough Council, objecting to the statement of the County chairman at the previous meeting that all the agitation against a new bridge over the Manawatu at Shannon came from the Foxton and Shannon Borough Councils. The letter proceeded; “As the matter has not been before this Council since the conference in January last it is difficult to know on what assumption the statement was based. As a matter of fact at its last meeting the Council decided that the resolution of the conference favouring a new bridge should be adhered to and the work expedited.” The Foxton Borough Council Would be satisfied with the withdrawal of the statement complained of. The chairman (Cr.. Monk) said he had no intention of withdrawing the statement—none whatever, but there was an explanation that he certainly would make. He had had a good deal to do with this matter and he repeated that the two bodies that most consistently opposed the building of a new bridge were the Foxton and Shannon Borough Councils. The matter came up at last meeting of the Council and the chairman quoted as follows from the “Chronicle” report of that meeting;— “Cr. Whyte said the trouble was that the local bodies were pulling against each other. If they had concentrated on getting a new, bridge it would have been well on the way by now. “The Chairman; This agitation comes from the Foxton and Shannon Borough Councils.” “That was quite correct,” continued Cr. Monk. “That was where the agitation did come from. I understand, however, that there lias now been u change of personnel so far as the Mayor of Foxton -is concerned and that the present Mayor has publicly supported at a conference the building of a new bridge. lam very pleased to know that Foxton people have seen fit to change to a Mayor who can see the matter In a sensible way, and I am more pleased to know that they are now supporting a new bridge. But I cannot withdraw my remark because in the past they consistently opposed It.”
