The Chronicle. PUBLISHED DAILY TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 1911. MR. FIELD AT LEVTN.
An excellent impression was crcatec by Mr Field at his meeting in Levii la.st 11 iglit. He gripped firmly oyer.) subject, whether brought up by Jiimself 01; suggested by his catechists and that be was making gooc points wns attested by the fact thai au audience which at first was apathetic. gradually roused itself, unti applause anu a fusillade of Oppositionist interjections punctuated the add ress. Beyond possibility of argument the candidate won the favour of a majority of his audience by the straightforward way in which he declared himself and defended his party. This was demonstrated when an amendment of "thanks only" was moved to the motion of "thanks and confidence." The "thanks only" amendment was lost 'by a two to one majority in a thin division, the bulk of the electors present declining to show their hands either way. In this they were well justified. There is no good reason why the secrecy which the ballot gives should be brought to nought 'by the display of hands for or against a public-meet-ing motion which has n'o effective result. Personally we have the courage of our opinions, and always are prepared to vote publicly on a politically issue, just as we are prepared always to discuss it in our columns Find to give an uncompromising opinion upon it. But we recognise that for a great many people it is inadvisable to be pronounced in public display of political leanings, and we lelieve that all candidates and their )ut-and-out supporters would be well ulvised to discourage the taking of commitment votes. However, the natters of last night's motion and lmendment were not within Mr field's authority j he is entitled to a 'were" moved, he is entitled to a •eoling of pleasure at the fate which )efel the amendment. This, we *ake it, was a testimony of public latisfaction with th-e open way in rhich he dealt with tlie various poliieal problems, and also to the effectveness of the disproof which he gave oneerning the Hine charges against he Government and one or two other ecent examples of the Opposition's ;rave imaginings.
