WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

Takapau Meeting The monthly meeting of the Takapau Women’s Institute was held in the Public Hall supper room on Thursday afternoon. Mrs W. B. White, president, presided over a very large attendance of members. The meeting took the form of a kitchen gift afternoon to Miss Joyce Kilford, who is shortly to be married A bouquet was presented to Miss Ki! ford by Master John Harward and she was also the recipient of numbers of tokens of goodwill from members. Miss Kilford was accorded musical honours. Votes (health germs) were tendered to two members in hospital, Mrs A. J Campbell and Miss Flora Me'Millan, an-I a vote of condolence was passed to Mr D. Vesty in the recent bereavement in his family. It was decided to hold an evening open social and dance on June 26. Arrangements were made for giving hospitality to members of the Blind Institute Band which, under the direc tioii of Mr Clutha Mackenzie, is giving a concert in Takapau in October. Enjoyable community singing was a pleasing item in the afternoon’s entertainment, the singing being led by Mrs W. Edgecombe and the accompaniments being played by Mrs A. E. Anderson. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames W. Jackson, R. McNab, J. Mullin and Miss Sylvia Thompson. Omakere Meeting The monthly meeting of the Omakere Women’s Institute was held on Thursday in the Omakere Hall. Mrs Aitken presided over a fair attendance of members. Members discussed the remits for the forthcoming annual conference to be held in Dunedin. Mrs Aitken was elected as delegate. A letter of thanks was received from the secretary of the Omakere Library for books contributed by members of the institute.

Arrangements were made for an entertainment to be held in August. The results of the competitions were: Baby’s vest: Miss Butler 1, Miss Wallace 2, Miss Kittow 3. Six plain oven scones: Mrs W. Kittow 1, Mrs Spotswood 2, Miss Wallace 3.

Bowl of flowers: Mrs Gilbertson 1, Mrs W. Kittow 2, Mrs G. C. Williams

Sixteen baby’s vests were handed in to be given to charity. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the hostesses, Mesdames Nairn, Norris, Rowe and Gilbertson.

After afternoon tea an interesting wall competition, arranged by Mrs Forbes-McHardy, was won by Mrs Thompson. Eskdale Meeting There was a splendid attendance at this month’s meeting of the Eskdale Women’s Institute. There were three visitors, one of whom was from Africa. The knitting competitions were popular. There was a large number of entries in both classes. Mrs E. Williams gained first prize in infant’s knitted coatee, with Miss D. Kirkham 2, and Miss Blair 3. A special competition for infants’ vests, to be given to the Plunket Society, resulted in 22 vests being knitted. Prizes for these were donated by Mrs Carmichael (president). Miss Blair was awarded first and Miss A. Florence second. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs Wilson and Miss Wilson. Their competition was won by Miss Floranco and Miss Martel was second. Three new members were enrolled. Sick committee appointed for the month were Mrs Carmichael and Mrs Williams. A most interesting demonstration of umbrella covering was given by Mrs Campbell. WALLINGFORD GROUP At the monthly meeting of the Wallingford Women’s Institute, Mrs R. P. Wilder presided over an attendance of 25 members. Final arrangements were made for the dance to be held on July 1. Miss Hazel Johnstone gave an interesting address on meal planning. The competition, best jar of tomato sauce, was judged by Mrs E. McLeod, the result being; Mrs Wilder 1, Airs Whitehead 2, Mrs Jackson 3. Another competition, “Most articles in a matchbox,” resulted; Mrs S Ward 1, Mrs Whitehead 2, Mrs Jackson 3. The hostesses woro Mesdames 11. Parsons, ,T. Canning, Whitehead and Miss Judd. Two new members were enrolled.

W.D.F.U.

Sherenden Branch

The monthly meeting of the Sherenden branch of the W.D.F.U. was held on Thursday afternoon at Mrs, H. Beamish’s home, Whana Whana. During tho afternoon the Rev. Mr. Hyde gave a very interesting address on well-known Cathedrals in England, and showed members some beautiful photographs to illustrate his talk. At the conclusion the president, Mrs H. Beamish, on behalf of members, presented Mr. Hyde with a leather wallet aa a mark of appreciation of his interest in the division. A musical competition afforded much amusement to members, and this was wdn by Miss H Shield. Airs, 'fressider delighted members with two musical items, and Miss J. Mason gave two recitations. A delicious afternoon ten was served in the dining-room by Mesdames S. and H. Beamish, and the singing of the National Anthem brought a very enjoyable meeting to a close. 1 in PAR
