AUSTRALIAN TARIFF
No Intention to Victimise Japan MARKETS STILL OPEN (Received 6. 9.30 a.m.) MELBOURNE, June 6. Au official reply has been sent by Sir Henry Gullett, Minister in Charge of Trade Treaties, to Mr. Mnrai. Con-sul-General for Japan, in regard to the representations made by the Japanese Government concerning the tariff controversy. Sir Henry refused to disclose tho terms, but it is understood the Commonwealth Government emphasised that it has no intention ot victimising Japan with its trade policy which, it is claimed, is directed towaids the protection of Australian and British industries against a flood of imports at prices far below world parity. ft was also pointed out that substantial markets are still open to Japan in Australia, and although the Commonwealth Government is anxious to continue negotiations lor a trade treaty with Japan, there is no intention to deviate from the new lai iff ,schedules.
