PUBLICITY FOR NAPIER
Letter from Government Department COMING CONFERENCE Evidence of the interest taken in Napier by the Department of Industries and Commerce was shown at the meeting of the Napier Chamber of Commerce last night, when a letter was received fro-n an official of the department, Mr L. J. Schmitt, offering to cooperate in securing better publicity for Napier. lu the course of his letter Mr Schmitt said that he had noticed that the Chamber proposed to call a conference of public bodies to discuss the matter. "This shows that the department is alive and keen to help,’’ said the chairman, Mr L. O. Rolls. Mr R. M. Chadwick (secretary) said that ho felt sure Mr Schmitt would attend the conference if notified when it was to take place. Mr W. J. Ballot said that in his opinion the Railway Department should be invited to attend the conference. Mr Ballot pointed out that there was room for improvement on the railways. He had recently travelled to Wellington in a first-class carriage, and on account of rain there was only one dry seat in the carriage. The arrangements for refreshments were also unsatisfactory. If cafeterias were introduced on to the trains it would be very much more satisfactory than the present method. Mr Rolls: They tried a dining-car on the Napier-Wellington express and it was an absolute failure. It was decided to invite the Railway Department to attend the conference.
