LABOUR’S AIMS
Universal Superannuation in New Zealand
RESTORATION OF CUTS
By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, June 4. The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage moved in the House of Representatives that the House sit on Friday and Monday from 2.30 p.m. to 10.30 and on Saturday from 10,30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. He explained that it was proposed to take the adjournment not later than Friday of next week, and earlier if possible. There was only one reason for taking the adjournment, and that was to give the Government time to shape important legislation.
It was not a question of having a holiday. The Government had important legislation bearing upon the promises it had made to the people of the Dominion and covering, for instance, pensions and a gradual increase in existing pensions whieh was a preliminary to" the introduction of universal superannuation in New Zealand, whieh the Government hoped to make a real thing during the life of this Parliament. There was also the restoration of salary cuts both inside and outside the Public Service, and mortgage adjustment and preparation of the Budget and legislation that would arise from it. Members would therefore see that there was reason for tho break, and he wanted the people to understand it. The Government wanted to make it as convenient as possible for members in taking the adjournment. Mr Savage said there was a broadcasting Bill that the Government wanted to place on the Statute Book before taking the adjournment; then there was tho Rent Restriction Bill and one or two comparatively small things. One dealt with control of traffic, whieh would be brought down if it was humanly possible. Hu mus assured by tin; Minister that ii was not very contentious; it was really the matter of controlling traffic in various highways more than anything else. In reply to a question by the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forties, Mr Savage said it was proposed at present to take the adjournment for five weeks, hut the actual date of reassembly would bo fixed later. Tim "notion wn ni/rocd to.
