Ratepayers' Confidence GRATITUDE OF BOARD Gratitude towards the Government for bringing the ccmprebeu»ive scheme for the control of the Jigamroro and Tutae'auri rivers within the financial resources of the JIawke's Bay Bivcrs Board’s district was expressed by the chairman of the board, Mr C. Lassen, in his annual report. The ratepayers, too, he added, had shown their appreciation, and alco their confidence in the board, by approving of the raising of the £10,000 lean for diversion work by a majority of more than two to one “The past year has perhaps been the most important one in the history of the board,’ 1 said Mr. Lassen. “During the year the control works of the Tutaekuri river have been steadily pursued and while this first part of the comprehensive ecueine was still in progress. the board entered into negotiations with the Government lor the currying out of the second and final part of the comprehensive scheme, viz., the control of the Ngaruroro river '1 hese negotiations as you know resulted in the Government offering to couttibute no less a sum than £120,000 toward the estimated cost of the scheme work, leaving only £60,000 of the cost for the board to contribute. “The board is very grateful to the Government for making the work possible by biinging it within the district's financial resources, and I believe the ratepayers too have shown their appreciation and also their confidence in the hoard by approving of the loan of £60.000 by the splendid majority of more than two to one. “Further activities of the board have resulted in the setting npwf a Government committee (which will be meeting within the next few days) to inquire into various matters relating to the adnisiment and extension of boundaries. representation. and system of ratin” operating within the rivers district.”
