DISAPPOINTING
Australian Three-Year-Olds With the season concluded in. respect of first-class racing on the flat, it must be admitted (says U Sydney writer) that our three-year-olds have not come up to expectations as stayers. Some did well up to a mile and a-half in the spring—in fact, they seemed a better lot than usual up to that distance. Palfresco won a Caulfield Cup in record time, and Garrio had very little less than weight-for-age when successful in the Williamstown Cup. Unfortunately Palfresco has proved difficult to train, and was unable to go on with his preparation for the Australian Cup. Garrio has been a failure in Sydney during the past few weeks, and Allunga, though the winner of both. St. Legers, Ims not distinguished himself in open company. It was excusable that he failed in the Sydney Cup with 41b. over weight-for-age, but his showing against the older horses in the Cumberland Plate did not permit of his being classed a specially good three-year-old. Young Idea has been a disappointment, and, though one of the first horses backed for the last Melbourne Cup, has not shown staying pretensions. Wykeham, despite his close second to Allunga in the St. Leger, did not shine with only 7.7 in the Sydney Cup, and though Egrnont, Loud Applause and Salamander did show staying form in that race, they were lightly weighted. However, as with Marabou, there may be developments among the four-year-olds as stayers early next season.
