PRODUCE MARKET
Shortage of Oats Likely Merchants in Hastings report a steady inquiry for produce without any marked activity except for an odd special line. Oats are likely to show a shortage and, owing to the hardening in values in the South Island, the principal oatgrowing centre, local prices have advanned considerably. Millers are going above the merchants in their offers for supplies, which is clue largely to the wheat having sprouted. As a result half of the food value has disappeared, and so a demand for oat products has been created. College Algerian seed is still procurable locally at 5/- per bushel, but a sharp rise is anticipated in the near future. Good quality Dunn oats are very scarce, and first quality lots are being retailed at 6/- per bushel, with a rising market in view. Local-grown Algerians aro selling from 3/6. The Hawke’s Bay seed is dark and does not compare with the specially-propagated sod from the South Island. Maize is very scarce, but the position may -be relieved with some supplies fioni Poverty Bay, which arc just coining on to the market. ’I he retail price will not be less than 7/6 per bushel, with a tendency to harden. Farm-dressed rye-grass is selling from 5/6 per bushel, according. to quality; machine-dressed uncertified 8/- per bushel; certified permanent pasture 8/6, with certified mother pasture making the highest values from 11/- to 12/-, according to quality.
