FIRE PREVENTION WEEK
Activities in Hastings VISITS TO FIRE STATION In connection with the observance of Fire Prevention Week in Hastings, the superintendent of the Hastings Fire Brigade, Mr. B. Henderson, has arranged to have the Fire Station and plant open for public inspection each evening, between the hours of 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., from this evening until next Saturday evening. This arrangement will enable the public to obtain an interesting insight, under expert guidance, into modern fire-fighting methods, and visitors will be conducted by members of the brigade and have everything explained to them. In conjunction with Mr C. O. Carrell, Borough Health and Building Inspector, Mr Henderson will carry out au inspection of ail business premises and ot fire-escapes at all hotels and boardinghouses. , The success of the fire-prevention propaganda since the establishment of the movement in 1931 has been remarkable. Losses by fire in 1931 amounted to £1,292,904, but in 1933 they had dropped to £044,781, or less than half. There was a lurther drop in 1934, when the total was only £506,112. The figures for 1935 are not yet available, but tue indications are that the losses are slightly increasing. The increase may he due to the increasing value of property, as improved economic conditions enhance property values, but it proves that there is a need for maintaining vigorously the educational work that Fire Prevention Week assists in carrying out.
