INTER-CLUB BOWLING

Gardner Shield Gam HASTINGS BEATS KIA TOA At the Hastings Bowling Club’s green on Saturday the first match for the shield recently presented by Air. C. Gardner, of the Hastings club, was played between Kia Toa and Hastings. This competition is intended to pro mote the inter-change of visits among the various Hastings clubs and Havelock North and accordingly it is stipulated that teams shall consist of not less than four rinks. Victory is credited to the team winning most games or, in the event of a tie in games, tQ the team securing most ppints. In Saturday’s contest Hastings managed to win by four games to two, though in aggregate points Kia Toa had a margin of 20 to their credit. Rowlands’s rink staged a great effort to win the shield for Kia Toa by equalising on games and so winning on points. With three down at the end of the twentieth head they had th® required four for a win on the 21st until Johnston, the opposing skip, who was' playing a particularly good game, drew the shot. Rowlands, driving perfectly, killed the head. In the replay Kia Toa again lay four until Johnston drew the shot and again Rowlands drove and killed the head. But Johnston’s team were not to be denied and clinched the issue in the next head, when they secured two. The keenness of the play throughout this game may be judged from the fact that nine heads in all were killed.
