WAIPAWA AFFAIRS

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING VARIOUS MATTERS DISCUSSED. From Our Own Correspondent. WAIPAWA, November 9. The monthly meeting of the Waipawa Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor, Mr G. H. Hunt, presiding over Crs. Yates, Dailey, Luubrick and Verran. Leave of absence was granted to Crs. Eagle and Thackeray. J. H. Francis and Co. wrote with reference to the loan conversion scheme, advising that an amended scheme was being prepared in view of •mission of two of the loans from the scheme previously submitted, and forwarding also, particulars of the system of redemption of debentures. They also inquired as to the method of securing the moneys necessary to pay premiums in connection with the conversion scheme. The clerk advised he had supplied Francis and Co., with particulars of surplus funds available, and that they had submitted the matter to the Loans Board which had approved the use of these funds for tin purpose of payment of premiums. The Mayor stated that certain of these funds represented unexpended balances of loans, which could only be used for the purposes for which they had been raised, except with the approval of the Loans Board. The council resolved that available funds as set out in the letter to Francis and Co. be used for the purposes of the premium loan in connection with conversion scheme. HEAVY TRAFFIC FEES. The Hawke’s Bay Employers’ Association advised of the annual meeting of the association.—Received. The Napier Borough Council wrote with reference to the allocation el heavy traffic fees for 1933-31, and advised that the Napier council t'as satisfied to continue oil the basis at present in operation It was resolved that the council advise the Napier borough that the present basis of allocation was quite acceptable. The Central Hawke s Bay Rugby Sub-Union wrote applying lor a reduction of the rent of Coronation Park for the 1934 season, in view of the difficulties facing the, union at the present time. Particulars were given of the gate takings in respect of the various matches held on the park and the relative expenses.—lt was resolved that the original agreement be adisered *O. The Valuer-General wrote advising that the Waipawa borough was on the list for re-valuation, and it was hoped that this would be completed in time

for the 1936-37 rating period.—Received. Tho Waipawa District High School made application tor the use of Coronation Park for the school sports, and also inquired whether the council could arrange to have the grass cut.—lt was decided on the Mayor’s motion that the school committee be granted the use of the park, the matter of cutting the grass to be kept in view. Cr. Yates thanked the council on behalf of the school committee. VISIT OF THE “WAIPAWA.” A letter was received from the Commissioner of Transport with reference to testing of brakes and lights. The clerk advised that a reply had been sent from information supplied by the traffic inspector. Messrs Lee, Mackie, Harker and McKay wrote forwarding subdivisional plan for approval—Approval was granted. The Chamber of Commerce wrote requesting that a grant be made towards the cost of Christmas decorations.— The usual grant is to be made. The Chamber of Commerce also wrote in connection with the first visit of the iu.v. Waipawa to Hawke’s Bay, offering to assist the council in any way with any celebrations that may be contemplated. It was decided on the Mayor’s motion that the Chamber be thanked for its offer and that the council keep in touch with Mr A. E. .lull, M.P., who has the matter in hand. The Mayor reported that Victoria street was in need of a further coat of tar, and suggested that an inspection should be made with a view to putting the work in hand as soon as possible, as otherwise the work already done would be partly destroyed. Cr. Limbrick stated that a number of the footpaths were also in need of attention, particularly a section near the Rathbone Home, which was put down some tune ago. The Mayor stated that at the time this particular work was done the then overseer. Mr H. Fletcher, had advised that it was too soon flor tarring, and tins was no'v becoming evident. At the time, however, the council was unable to do other than go on with the work. Ci. Limbrick brought up the matter of supervision of the men empl'oy-i-d on relief works, and thought that il. would be more satisfactory if all imu available were employed on the one job in a body, rather than having them working in smaller numbers m various parts of the borough. Ihe .'favor pointed out that this was done whenever possible, but as the bigger works were completed it was not always possible to have the men working together. Cr, Yates suggested that a general clean up of the borough should be made before the Christmas period. He also inquired whether anything could now be done in the matter of the camber of Waverley street road. STAFF ARRANGEMENTS. The Mayor referred to the resignation of Mr H. Fletcher from the position of overseer, and said that the time

had now arrived when some step mustbe taken to fill the positiou. lie suggested that in view of his long service as a member of the staff, Mr K. I’ctherick should be appointed to the position. Cr. Yates supported tho suggestion. It was moved by the Mayor that Mr Petherick be appointed tio the position, the motion being seconded by Cr. Yates and carried. * The Health Department is to be notified of Mr Fletcher’s resignation. Mr W. Taylor was appointed as poundkeeper. The Mayor brought up the matter of some assistance being provided for the town clerk. Cr. Yates favoured the suggestion and that any such assistance should be provided lis soon as possible. Cr. Limbrick thought the matter should be held over to be dealt with by a full meeting of the council. A special meeting is to be called to deal with the matter. Cr. Limbrick brought up the matter of placing a notice board to indicate the position of the Women’s Rest. A board is to be erected in a suitable position. The paysheet totalling £lB3 12/8 was adopted. In the matter of the suggestion contained in the gas manager’s report Cr. Yates moved that the gas committee have power to purchase necessary gas appliances.—Carried. The .Mayor reported that preparations were being made to carry out concreting work at the cemetery.
