NOVEL PLAY CONSTRUCTION
A. W. Pezet and C. T. Revere have discovered a new method of representing the thoughts of persons in a play they have written. The play is called “Hands as Bands,’’ and is based on a novel by Revere, of which the title is “The Voice Within,’’ says the “San Francisco Chronicle.’’ The old-fash-ioned way of stepping down to the footlights and making a confidant of the audience went out many years ago. Eugene O’Neill and Philip Moeller as author and director of “Strange Interlude” conceived the idea of suspended animation while the characters spoke their thoughts. Now come the Messrs Pezet and Revere with their idea, which will be aired at the Biltmore Theatre, New York. The leading man speaks his piece to the other characters and then a record and an amplifier spread abroad his real thoughts. There are fifteen scenes in the play and no intermissions are planned. The idea seems a good one, if skilfully presented,.
Fox are hoping to make a talkie version of D. W. Griffith’s famous silent success, “Way'Down East.” If they are able to buy the rights, Janet Gaynor will play Lillian Gish’s original role. Maurice Chevalier has signed a contract with Darryl Zanuck to star in a musical film based on the 1* rench comedy, “The Red Cat,” when he returns to Hollywood from his present Continental trip. Ralph Morgan, Vince Barnett, Andy Devine, William Stack and Rudolph Aliment have been engaged by box to plav important parts in the forthcoming Warner Baxter film “Hell in the Heavens,” now in preparation. This is the sceen adaptation made by Ted lar-so-s and Byron Morgan of the play “The Ace.”
