WALK ROUND HAVELOCK

Permanent Path Suggested VALUABLE ASSET TO VILLAGE A suggestion that a colfix footpath be constructed around the outskirts of Havelock North, with a view to having a suitable walk made was put forward at last evening's meeting of the Havelock North Town Board by the chairman, Mr. H. K. von Dadelszen. A proposal was that a walk be constructed from the village along Te Mata road, up Sima Avenue, then along the lower road and on to Ellison street to Duart road; Hom there one could go direct to the village via Duart road, or alternatively along Tanner street to the cemetery and then down Lucknow road ami .Middle road to the village. The chairman said that for some time he had thought that a walk around Havelock was an urgent need. Many people, especially visitors, often wished on a Sunday afternoon to go lor a walk around the village, particularly on the lulls, and lie thought that a proper path which would give walkers an enjoyable outing would be appreciated. He considered that Duart road was the obvious starting point und that alter reaching the top of the road one could go eituer to the right towards the cemetery and colleges or else back via Simla Avenue. A large number of visitors stayed at Havelock and often went out walking. The facilities which such a walk as proposed would offer to these people would prove very welcome. Also it would prove a great boost to Havelock and he felt sure that it would be a valuable asset to the village. The clerk, Air W. H. Anderson, said that the suggestion was one which had had a place iu the thoughts of many of them Fur some time. Quite recently he had been talking to Mr George Nelson and he had proposed a walk along Simla Avenue, then down the lower road and to the corner of McHardy and Ellison streets. T rom there one could go either along Ellison road to Duart road, or Air Nelson suggested that a path be made from McHardy street in his property below Mr Elder’s und Mr Price's, immediately above Duart House, to join Duart road a few chains below Ellison street. Mr Nelson had not sold this strip of land with tho properly recently built ou and if a path were constructed along that gully he would plant native trees ou each side of it. The clerk thought the chairman s proposal a good one and would like to see it put into effect.

Mr J. J. Nimon said that time and again people came out on the bus and alighted at the Simla Avenue terminus, intending to go for a walk over the hills. They often asked where they should go and ho suggested the aforementioned route, going back to the village either via Duart road or if they had more time by way ofi Lucknow road. On arrival at tho ’bus after their tramp they were all loud in their praises of the walk and often had an entirely different outlook of the village aud its surroundings, much to Havelock’s advantage. They were all highly delighted with the walk. Other members of the board also spoke in warm support of the proposal, saying that in the summer time particularly a large number of visitors stayed at Hillsbrook and made a practice of walking around Havelock. Such a path as suggested would be very welcome fo them and would undoubtedly prove a great asset to the district.

No definite decision was arrived at, the question being left, in abeyance for the meantime, to be discussed again at a future meeting.
