NEW IDEAS WORTH TESTING
Dainty Serviette Rings.—Never throw away the cardboard reels which have had “Floss” or other silks on them. These make lovely serviette rings with the aid of a little coloured raffia or silk. I made mine with raffia. First pull out the cardboard ends of reel, then wind raffia closely over and through ring. When ring is covered sew in the end of thread. Then a pattern can be worked around the ring, or just a little posy in one or two places. They look so sweet worked in different colours for each member of the household. Three or four strands covers each one. Test for Fermentation.—How many housewives, not altogether trusting their sense of smell, throw away •‘doubtful” custards, gravies, soups, etc., rather than risk testing bv taste? A perfectly safe test is that of hearing. Listen carefully, with the oar close to the food. Fermented food gives off a slight crackling or spluttering sound impossible to mistake. If there is no sound fermentation has not begun, an-’ the food is sale to eat. These useful hints wore culled from “The New Idea,” the threepenny weekly paper for Australian and New Zealand women, which makes a feature of Now Ideas Worth Testing. Other features are an enclosed pattern each week, short stories, articles and departments. Now on sale, price threepence.
