INCREASE IN BETTING

EASTER RACE MEETINGS. RISE OF EIGHT PER CENT. Betting on the totalisator at tho racing and trotting meetings in New Zealand during Easter showed an increase of about 8 per cent, on the total for the corresponding period last year The total amount handled at 12 meetings, some of which have not yet been completed, was £269,379 10/-, as against £249,041 in the Easter period last year and £265,409 in 1932.

Practically every club registered an increase, the three decreases being due to special circumstances. Several small fields caused a shrinkage of £5904 10/-, or about 7 per cent., at the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting, at which the single pool betting system operated. Tho reduction of 9.5 per cent, in the turnover at the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s pne-day meeting was accounted for by dull and showery weather. The Taupeka total showed a decrease of 47 per cent., but the comparison is made with a combined Taupeka-Beaumont meeting last year. The most notable increase was at tho New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s first day in Christchurch, where the appearance of the Australian pacer Walla Walla contributed to the increase of 30 per cent, in totalisator investments. Five other increases of over 10 per cent, were registered. Once again Auckland headed the volume of betting for the Dominion with a. total of £76.773 10/- for the two days, next on the list being the Christchurch trotting meeting first day figure of £39.812, and the Christchurch race mooting first day of £31,786. The following table gives comparative figures of totalisator betting in tho Dominion on Easter Saturday and Monday in the, past, three years RACING.

The following table gives the amounts by which the investments at the various meetings have increased or decreased, compared with last year, together with percentages of the advances or reductions:— INCREASES Per-
