GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS

HORTON WINS AT AUCKLAND. RALPH BEATEN, TWO UP. By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, April 3. The Auckland provincial golf championship tourney was concluded at Titirangi links in fine weather, the winner being Horton (Masterton) who beat Ralph (Auckland) in the final, 2 up. Both played too carefully for the standard of golf to be high. At one stage Ralph was three down and four Io play, but hung on tenaciously to the final green.

Considerable interest was attached to the semi-final between Horton and Dobson (New South Wales). The Australian appeared to be unable to concentrate in the early stages with the result that he was three down at tho end of five holes. He then settled down and his fighting ability was well demonstrated by the fact that they were all square at the turn. After the tenth had been halved, however, Horton won three holes in a row, playing excellently with his irons. Tho match ended at tho fifteenth, Horton being four up. Ralph eliminated Mac Ewan in the other semi-final. He was four up at the turn, but Mac Ewan recovered a good deal, although the match finally ended at the seventeenth in favour of Ralph, two and one. At the subsequent presentation of prizes the president of the Titirangi (llub announced on behalf of the New Zealand Golf Council that the team to represent the Dominion in the Kirk Windeyer Cup contest at Middlemore on Friday and Saturday would be chosen from the following:—Horton (captain), Hornabrook, Menzies, Silk and Wright.
