RELIGIOUS CLASHES
Hindus and Depressed Classes MANY POLICE AND CIVILIANS KILLED CALCUTTA, April 2. There is growing tension between orthodox Hindus and the depressed classes over the latters’ demand, supported by Gandhi, for removal of the untouchability ban and their claim of the right to worship in Hindu temples. Serious clashes have occurred in several places, and a number of civilians and police have been injured. Patna, Delhi, Lahore and Bombay are all centres of religious rioting responsible for a number of deaths. The most eerious outbreak occurred near Patna, where Mohammedans leading a buffalo through the streets to slaughter for a wedding feast were attacked by Hindus. A free fight ensued iu which three were killed and 20 injured before armed police dispersed the combatants.
