HOLD-UP AT ORINGI

Four Young Men in Court

FURTHER CHARGES POSSIBLE

(Special to ‘‘Tribune.”) DANNEVIRKE, April 2.

The latest development in an alleged attempted hold-up at Oringi, near Daunevirke, on Saturday night was the appearance of three young men before Mr W. Dobson, J.P., at the Dannevirke Police Court this morning. One other accused, being under the age of 16 years, was dealt with in the juvenile court.

The accused were Stanley Jordon Madden, aged 17 years, Robert Lloyd, aged 18, and Ronald Herbert Lloyd, aged 20, and they were charged with, on March 31 last, at Oringi, assaulting Wilfred John Cochrane, Robert George Russell and Richard Ellingham with intent to commit robbery. Detective B. Farquharson, of Hastings, when asking that the accused be remanded to appear on Tuesday, April 10, stated that there was a possibility of further charges being made against the accused, one being of almost equal seriousness as the present information. The accused made application for bail but this was refused.

The Dannevirke police effected a smart capture following upon the alleged hold-up of three motorists, Messrs Cochrane, Ellingham and Russell, who were returning from the race meeting at Feilding, When near Oringi (about four miles south of Dannevirke) they saw a man lying on the road and, believing him to have been injured, they stopped to lend assistance. As the ear came abreast of the outstretched man, he is alleged to have jumped to his feet and presented a revolver at the occupants of the car. Fortunately the engine was idling and the driver, Mr Cochrane, had the presence of mind to gather up speed and departed lyUnder the direction of Sergeant 0. Dogget, officer-in-charge, of the district, the police conducted an intensive search and succeeded in arresting two men within 24 hours, two others being arrested a few hours later. The actual arrests were effected at Te Ruhunga by Constables Colebourne and Bell.
