HURRICANE AT SEA

HIGH VELOCITY OF WIND

great damage Caused.

EXPERIENCE OF STEAMERS.

Auckland, January 17. A hurricane with a wind velocity estimated at 110 miles an hour, was experienced by the motor ship Armadale, which arrived at Auckland yesterday, when the vessel was en route from Montreal to Now York to load her present cargo.

The Armadale left Montreal on November 5 and three days later a fresh north-east gale was experienced. On November 9 the wind had increased to hurricane force and was accompanied by mountainous seas and a high swell, which caused the vessel to labour heavily. As she had not loaded she did not ship much water and no damage was done. At mid day the vessel had to be hove-to for 16 hours. Early in the morning of November 10 the hurricane reached its greatest force, but three hours later the storm abated and the vessel resumed her course for Sandy Hook about 30 miles away.

The hurricane caused damage to the extent of £1,000,000 to property on the New England coast and numbers- of vessels suffered. So severe was the weather than three New fork pijots were unable to disembark from vessels which had left New York and the pilots had to be taken to Europe. A pilot spent three hours trying to board the 32,000 tons liner Europa when she arrived off Sandy Hook from Europe. The pilot steamer lost two boats when endeavouring to embark pilots from vessels which had left New Y ork.
