PROGRESS AT CROWNTHORPE
THE VALUE OF FERTILISERS. The value of fertiliser applied to the lighter country in this district is amply illustrated in the bloom and finish of stock hailing from Crownthorpe district at the weekly sales at Stortford Lodge. When this block was settled by returned soldiers, the carrying capacity was extremely poor. By the use of the plough in establishing a pasture of English grasses and New Zealand white clover, the carrying capacity has been increased threefold. After a good sward has been established, the application of superphosphate has given most satisfactory results. Invariably drafts of fat lambs from this district are some of the heaviest received at the local freezing works. A further testimony of how this district has progressed is apparent by the quality of the stock offered at the weekly sales. There is no class of country in Hawke’s Bay more receptive to good farming and the application of fertilisers than the district under discussion.
