There was a sensation at the Queen’s Club tennis tournament, when Hopman brilliantly defeated the American champion, Vines, B—6, 6—2, 6—3. The Australian discovered that Vines thrived on speed, so varied his. pace cunningly. Vines showed surprising deficiency in trying to volley the Australian’s soft shots. Critics say that Hopman’s game was as fine as anything seen in the present season. In the third round Crawford beat Henderson, 6—l, 6 —l; Clemenger beat Taylor, 6—l, 6—o; Kuwabara beat Sproule, 6—3, 6—l.
