CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

81-MONTHLY MEETING. The bi-monthly meeting of the Waipukurau Chamber of Commerce was held last night, the president (Air E. G. Dowrick) presiding over a fairly large attendance of members. At the outset the president referred to the bereavement sustained by Mr W. P. Smith (postmaster), an honorary member, whose father had passed away in Hawera recently, and a resolution of condolence was carried in the customary manner. A motion of sympathy with Mrs G .Smales and family in the death of her husband, a prominent public-spirited citizen of Waipukurau, was also carried. The reply of the N.Z. Railways Board in regard to the overture of the chamber in respect of the reinstatement of the early morning and return evening train to Napier was considered. This shoived that on economic grounds the service could not be agreed to, the present arrangement being specially satisfactory in the matter of stock and goods traffic. The chamber was thanked for its constructive representations. Letters from -Mr A. E. Jull, M.P., were also read, suggesting ihat the chamber could approach the Post and Telegraph Department in respect of the subsidising of the bus services to Hast-

ings and Napier in respect of mail services.

It was resolved to thank Mr Jull and the Railway Board for their replies, Mr F. W. Ward being the mover and Mr E. H. Leigh the seconder. The chamber agreed that no special benefit would result from mail services by bus.

The N.Z. Associated Chambers of Commerce forwarded an explanation as to the basis of the special levy recently decided upon, the assessment in the case of the Waipukurau chamber being £l5. The matter was left in the hands of the executive.

The president reported on the progress made in regard to the inauguration of commercial night classes in Waipukurau and explained that the District High School Committee had agreed to co-operate in this matter. After some discussion it was resolved on the motion of Messrs Holmes and Ward that the chamber’s special committee confer with the School Committee’s sub-committee on the subject of the terms for the hiring of typewriters. Sympathetic reference was made by members as to the heavy business loss sustained by Mr J. Rapley as the result of a railway mishap.
