PARKE ISLAND HOME

AMICABLE ARRANGEMENT. ENDORSED BY WAIPAWA BOARD. The Waipawa Hospital Board yesterday endorsed the action of the chairman and secretary in negotiating with the other contributory boards in forming a Parke Island Joint Committee whilst in Wellington recently. The opinion was expressed that, as an amicable settlement had been reached, considerable progress would be made. The chairman (Mr W. H. Rathbone) presented the following report on the matter:— “Whilst at the conference, the secretary and myself attended a special meeting held between delegates from the Hawke’s Bay, Wairarapa and Dannevirke Hospital Boards regarding the Parke Island question. Dr. Shore, Director of Hospitals, and Mr Keisenberg, secretary to the Department of Health, were also present. “After a very mil discussion, in which a very large number of points were cleared up, an amicable arrangement was reached, practically entirely upon the lines suggested in the resolution carried at the last meeting of the Waipawa Hospital Board —i.e., it was agreed that in future each pay for its own inmates and that undomiciled inmates and overhead charges be paid for in proportion to respective capital valuations. “A stalemate was nearly reached regarding the present inmates, but in endeavours to obtain finality, your delegates conceded the point that those inmates already a charge against, the Parke Island Committee should be paid for on a valuation basis. “Had this not been done I feel certain that we would have been as far away from finality as ever, but as matters now stand, there is a feeling of confidence and trust amongst the three contributorv boards’ delegates which I. for one, hope will be maintained. “I agree with the Hawke’s Bay Hospital Board that, with the new order of things, particularly in view of definite undomiciled residents throughout the Hawke’s Bav v-ovince, the Wairoa hoard should he strongly urged to enter into the agreement.”
