WAIPUKURAU SALE

BEST EXPORT INQUIRY FOR

HEIFER BEEF. A better export inquiry for heifer beef was responsible for increased interest at the Waipukurau sale yesterday in cattle suitable for export. Vendors of cattle at recent sales have had very little encouragement to forward their entries, and it will require some buoyant sales to encourage entries of cattle in any number. In the fat sheep section prices were lower than at any previous sale during this season. This time last year fat ewes were becoming scarce, with a decided rise in price, but this season has been quite the reverse, with prices lower in June than they were in December, when the sheep were just off tho shears. The future prospect for fat sheep for local consumption seems difficult to forecast because under ordinary circumstances, with a largely increased number having been killed for export, it would be safe to assume that the local market would have advanced by now. But graziers will have to bear in mind, with the present dubious outlook for export ewe mutton, that exporters will be pleased to unload their stock on the local market in preference to shipping. There' are sufficient quantities left in store in New Zealand to feed the whole population until next freezing season opens, and still leave a large quantity for shipment. Such being the position, there may be no rise in local prices equal to last season. The balance of the sheep offered in the store pens did not meet with spirited competition yesterday, but prices were much on a par with last week’s prices. BROKERS’ REPORTS.
