MURDER TRIAL
THE BARNEY CASE HEEARING IN LONDON. QUEUES OF FASHIONABLE WOMEN, (United Press Association—By Cable— Copyright.) (Received 13, 8.35 a.in.) London, June 12. Crowds of fashionably-dressed women queued up outside the Westminster Police Court when Airs Barney was charged with murder. The prosecuting counsel related how neighbours early in the morning heard Airs Barney scream: ‘‘Get out of my house! 1 hate you! 1 will shoot you!'’ They then heal'd shots and cries of anguish, Airs Barney exclaiming: “I love you so, chicken! Come back. I’ll do anything you ask me.” A doctor found Airs Barney kneeling beside the body, kissing it and saying: “1 love you.” She was in evident distress. Alls Barney’s statement to the police was that she quarrelled with Stephen about a woman. He attempted to take a revolver from her and the weapon went off during the struggle. The prosecution intimated that Sir Bernard Spilsbury would give evidence that it was not impossible, but extremely improbable for the wound to have been caused accidentally or for deceased to have shot himself. A gun expert would give evidence in support of the theory that it was impossible for the deceased to pull the trigger and inflict a wound of this character and position. The Crown was also tendering a second charge of shooting at Stephen with intent to do grievous bodily harm on Alay 19. The accused was remanded till June 18.
On June 5 Mrs Eliva Dolores Barney, actress, daughter of Sir John Alullens, a retired stockbroker, was arrested and remanded for a week on a charge of the murder of Michael Stepnen, son of a bank manager, who was found dead shot in the chest in Airs Barney’s luxurious Kensington flat. Deceased’s brother stated that Alic-hael’s debts had been paid frequently by his father.
