FIRST ATKINSON CUP ROUND ; WANDERS V. RANCERS. FORMERS’ LUCK IN. Wanderers and Bangers met in the first round for the Atkinson Cup at Cornwall Park, Hastings, on Saturday, when the former were lucky to win. Wanderers kicked off. The opening stages were slightly in favour of Rangers, Hawthorne being called into action early McKenzie got down on the left wing, but his centre was very weak and Rangers advanced. Hawthorne cleared a long dropping shot and play returned to midfield. Christie broke away fast, but the shot went wide. Rangers kept up a steady pressure and Hawthorne saved another good shot. Rangers finished badly when near the - goal, but kept Hawthorne always on the alert An advance by Wanderers was nullified by off-side plaj. After some midfield play, McKenzie got the ball across, and Tasker, making a mistake, left Shotten with an open goal. Rangers were having most of the game, but their attempts were futile in the vicinity of goal. The shooting of both sides was woefully ineffective. Half time was called with no alteration in the score. SECOND SPELL. The second spell opened with Rangers attacking. Shepherd nipped a movement in the bud by a skilful kick, but Wanderers returned and were awarded a corner, which was cleared. Christie received and pushed the ball out to Barron who finished with a great shot whicli Hawthorne just cleared. Rangers faded perceptiblj* and Wanderers had a little more of the game. The play for some time was very scrappy with three corners in succession, the third proving successful, Hartley doing the needful. Wandereri 2 Rangers - 1 Bangers now got their opponents rattled and were all over them, narrowly missing the equalising goal. Rangers kept up the pressure, Wanderers having practically five backs. There was only one team in the picture, Rangfers playing like a team inspired. Wanderers got across the halfway line for the second time in this spell, but their stay was very brief, and the Blues returned. Tasker was called upon for the first occasion since half time and a little later again kicked clear. Rangers were given another corner which was cleared.
