HASTINGS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING. SUCCESSFUL YEAR RECORDED. The annual meeting of tho Hastings Basketball Association was field last Saturday, when Miss J. D. Law (president) presided over a fair attendance of representatives from the various clubs. The annual report and balance-sheet were presented. These showed a successful season for 1931, unhampered by the results of tho earthquake. Twenty-six teams bad entered tho competition, 19 playing on Saturday and seven on Thursday. The Hastings champions, High School O.G. A., bybeating Central Hawke’s Bay champions, Otane, retained the Haw-kc’s Bay Championship for Hastings. In our own competition H.S.O.G. A., were senior Saturday champions, with High School A., as runners-up; Convent Old Girls 8., were junior champions, with High School 8., as runners-up, and Convent Old Girls were Thursday champions, with West End 8., as runners up. The June 3 sevon-a-side tournament was again a great success, twenty-four teams entering in the three grades. The winners were H.S.O.G. A., High School B, and High School D.
A very pleasant function took place on October 3, when, after the H.B. Champion match between H.S.O.G. A., and Otane, His Worship the Mayor addressed a large gathering of players and enthusiasts, speaking of the great progress basketball lias made during the last few years, and expressing interest in it as a valuable sport for young women. Later Mrs Roach, patroness of our association, presented to clubs the trophies won during the year.
The only other public function of tho year was the annual ball, held on September 24. So far as organisation and management were concerned this was a complete success; but, owing to non-attendance of players it resulted in a financial loss.
A forw-ard step taken during the year was the formation of an Accident Insurance Fund for players. Hawke’s Bay and Hastings Associations each donated £5, and in addition a levy of 3d per registered player was charged. Payment was made to one injured player, and the association feels that a step in the right direction has been taken.
The balance-sheet reveals that the association has a credit balance of approximately £lO. This is considerably lower than last year, and some discussion took place at the meeting concerning the advisability of raising funds in order to send a Hawke’s Bay team to the New Zealand Tournament at Invercargill. Several delegates thought that in the present economic condition the expense was unjustifiable The matter was finally referred to the executive.
The election of officers for 1932 resulted as follows:—-Patroness, Mrs Roach (unanimously re-elected); president, Miss J. D. Law (unanimously reelected); vice-presidents, Messrs. Donovan, Penlington and Maddison; hon. secy, and treas., Miss G. Symes; asst, secy., Miss L. Birkley.
