NAPIER HARBOUR BOARD
ITEMS OF GENERAL INTEREST. YESTERDAY’S MEETING. Reporting on the dredge Apiti. the Napier Harbour Board yesterday, the engineer, Mr J. D. Holmes, stated: “The deepening of the area between the deeper water south of Lever street and the turning basin being completed, the dredge whs shut down and moved on to moorings at the southern end of the available Water. The floating and shore pipe lines have been disconnected and brought into the store yards. The dredge boilers have been cleaned and the machinery is being cleaned and greased.” Outlining the development of the Ahuriri lagodn, the chairman, Mr A. E. Jull, M.P., said that he had taken the plans of the proposals to Wellington, where he had consulted with tho Minister of Unemployment, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, who had been asked to have his officers peruse them in order to sco whether they were suitable and if su to give an early reply. The Minister had promised to do so, but owing to the election intervening, no reply had yet been received. Mr Jull stated he would endeavour to finalise matters as soon as possible. “Charts as instructed were prepared showing the depths of water at both harbours before and after dredging since the earthquake and duly forwarded to the Loans Board,” stated the engineer, Mr J. D. Holmes, in his report to the Vohrd. The Board decided to renew a loan of £21,000. which is to fall due on January 20 for a further period of 30 years. Application is to be made by the board to the State Advances Department, requesting that the loan of £22,000 be given to the board as early as possible in one sum, this loan having been sanctioned recently by tho Loans Board. The Board set up a committee consisting of tho chairman, Mr A, E. Jull, M.P., and Messrs J. E. Jones and McLean to meet representatives of the Wanganui Harbour Board regarding tho proposed charter of the dredge Kaibne. The Wanganui board is to be asked When it would be convenient for its representatives to crime to Napier to discuss the matter. The Napier* Borough Council has agreed with the Napier Harbour Board to take over as a public road portion of Customs Quay at Port Ahuriri giving a 52ft width of mid at Bridge street and increasing to 66ft at Barry Bros.’ property, tho street to terminate at the west boundary of tho Hawke’s Bay Farmers’ Co-operative Association’s property. This work will evenlu ally involve the setting back of the board’s railway tracks, but this need not bo done until the board is restoring the quay. In connection with the ifnprovoments to the Marine Parade, the Board decided that the Borough Council be informed tile board is prepared to grant them the extra area on the seaward side of the hah On the same terms ns the pa-i '.line •> >. 1 site, that is, ou a 14 years’ liceise.
The secretary (Mr J. P. Kenny) is to see the Borough Commissioners regarding the different sketches of tho proposals—one from the Borough Council and tho other from the Napier Chamber of Commerce. It was also decided that the Napier Chamber of Commerce be informed the board is dealing direct with the Napier Borough Council in connection with the matter of the Marine Parade improvements.
