LEVEL CROSSING SMASH

CYCLIST FATALLY INJURED. Christchurch, Dec. 7. Fatal injuries were received by Eric Andrew, single, when the motor cycle he was riding was struck by the on gine of the inward express train at the level crossing at Islington at five o’clock this afternoon. Andrew was employed as a chemist at the New Zealand Refrigerating Coy. ’s freezing works at Islington. As he was riding over the crossing, the cow-catcher of the engine caught, him and ho was flung a distance of eighteen yards. He was picked up unconscious and was rushed to the Christchurch Hospital by the express train, but he died at seven o’clock. The crossing is an open one allowing a clear view of the line, and has a compulsory stop sign. Andrew apparently did not see the train nor hear the whistle.
