FINES OF £200

BOOKMAKING CHARGES. Stratford, Dec. 7. Fines of £2OO each wore imposed by Mr Tate, S.M., on Dominick Sasarich, Felix Cobrica and William Henry Lash, on charges of bookmaking. The charges were a sequel to a police raid on Saturday. All the defendants pleaded guilty. Counsel for the defence made a strong plea for the lesser penalty, and referred to the law as being hypocritical. Evidence was gr en by the town clerk, as to the excellent character of Sisarich and Cobrica. The Magistrate said that the Court was not concerned with actions of legislature. The police and Court had to administer the law, not to criticise it. He declined to reduce the penalties. "Walter Ernest Watkins was ordered to pay eight shillings and costs, on a charge of bci g found in a common gaming house without lawful excuse.
