CONCILIATION COUNCIL
IRON WORKERS SEEK SHORTER HOURS. MASTERS’ COUNTER PROPOSALS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Dec. 8. A shorter working week, with tho object of spreading work among more men and assisting toward a solution of the unemployed problem, was sought by the ironworkers of Now Zealand, who discussed the case with the Ironmasters’ Federation before tho Conciliation Commissioner, Mr. Hally, to-day. The unions are asking for a 35-hours week, instead of 44, and a generally higher scale of wages was submitted. The masters’ counter proposals are that the working hours should be eight and a half a day, and four hours on Saturdays; and further, that the employers should not be compelled to pay overtime unless the number of hours stipulated were exceeded.
The proceedings will probably oc cupy the whole day, and possibly ex tend into to-morrow.
