Mr Eugene Casey, who has recently been appointed the Chief Engineer of Railways, is a former resident of Napier. He was promoted from divisional superintendant at Auckland to be assistant chief engineer at Wellington last May. Mr Casey joined the Railway Department as a cadet in 1902, subsequently serving at Wanganui, Auckland, Greymouth and Ohakune districts. In 1912 he took over the duties of assistant engineer for the Auckland district and in 1916 was in charge of the grqde easement works between Pembrose and Mercer. Five years later he was transferred to the Christchurch district, where he was engaged on remodelling the station yards on the Midland line prior to the opening of the Qtira tqnnel. In March, 1925, he was appointed ispectmg engineer, with his headquarters at Wellington. Since that date, Mr Casey has occupied the positions of chairman of the Suggestions and Inventions Committee, as well as acting on several departmental committees.
