WANTON DAMAGE
EX-MINISTER’S HOME RAIDED. DECLARED “POLITICAL SPITE.” In an ■attack believed to have been an aftermath of the British election, raiders stole the historic county flag of Northumberland and damaged Wallington Hall, residence of Sir Charles Trevelyan, former Labour Minister of Education, at Caipbo. The flag was flying from a pole in tho grounds. Tho vandals tied up tho front door with rope cut from the flagpole, temporarily barricading the household to prevent pursuit while they escaped in an automobile. Four ancient figures wore tipped off their pedestals, and masonry around the doorways also was damaged. Before leaving, the raiders hurled a large stone through a window of the gardener’s cottage. Sir Charles was unwilling to discuss the affair, which he attributed to “political spite.” He was defeated when he tried to hold the Newcastle Central division for Labour. The flag was in his possession as Lord Lieutenant of Northumberland, and has great historic value. Wallington Hall has many famous art treasures and ■ rich in literary associations. Within its walls Lord Macaulay, great-uncle of Sir Charles, did much of his writing.
