TAUPO TROUT FISHING

SPORT SPOILED BY WIND. CATCHES OF PAST WEEK. The wind has been continuously from the south-west during the past week, and that has to a great extent spoilt the fishing on the eastern side of the lake. Rivers such as the Waitahanui and the Hatepe have been unfishable (writes the Taupo correspondent of the “New Zealand Herald.”) The wind has also affected launch parties, although the trolling parties that have been out have done remarkably well, considering the choppy condition of the lake. Some very fair catches have been made, including a lOjlb. fish in excellent condition. From a row-boat two rods using a fly got the limit of 30 fish. With the dry fly above the Huka Falls one angler also secured his limit. At Tokaanu Bay the few trolling parties who have been out have all done well, the condition of the fish being from fair to good. A Taihape angler and his party took 30 fish in two days. There have been very few anglers on the Tongariro river. The fish caught are mostly kelts, which have not regained their condition since spawning. Tauranga-Taupo has not been fished. Motutere and Jellicoe Points have been very little fished. A party of three camped there for the past week, getting a few fish, the condition of which was only fair to medium. The Hatepe has be p n unfishable owing to the heavy south-west wind which has been blowing in. Waitahanui has been unfishable because of the same cause. The same conditions obtained at Three and Four Mile Bays. Dry fly fishing during the past week has been very good, the evening rise is all that can be desired. A number of rods fishing Imth sides of tho river all secured good baskets of well-condi-tioned fish. The limit was secured by one angler on Monday evening. Other catches varied from three fish up to 13, the average weight being about 41b. The launches that have been out have all come in with very good catches. The continuous blow has been against trolling parties, but the average catch has been about nine fish for half-day trips. Two ladies took nine fine fish, averaging 61b., the largest being lOjlb.
