HAWKE’S BAY SCOUTS

DISPLAY OF HANDICRAFTS. Substantial proof of the excellent and useful training given to the boys of the Hawke’s Bay Scouts’ Association was given at an exhibition of handicrafts in the St. Augustine’s Hall, Napier, on Saturday afternoon and evening. Well made articles of practical use were displayed by the following troops: St. Augustine’s, Congregational, Greendale, Esk, Puketapu, Second Hastings, Havelock North and Hereworth. The boys have displaved praiseworthy talent in their work and the many who visited the hall expressed admiration at their accomplishment. Perhaps the most interesting exhibition of all was tho display of miniature bridges, fences, etc., made by the boys of the St. Augustine’s troop. These showed that tho boys have been giver, sound tuition in a craft which is of practical use. On tho stalls of the various other troops were neatly made articles of every description, ranging from knick-knacks made of wood to useful household utensils. Tho various appurtenances of a wireless set were among tho many articles which showed talent. A canoe constructed out of sheet-iron and capable of seating a man weighing twelve stone demonstrated how less than ten shillings worth of material could bo turned to good use. Tho highest praise is due to tho clubs of tho various troops who exhibited handicrafts on a separate stall. The cubs, none of whom aro over eight years of age, have shown considerable ability in fashioning objects which by no means appear to bo tho work of novices. Useful little knick-knacks of wood were exhibited, as well as fancy work and utensils for the housewife. Praise is due not only to tho cribs who made these articles but also to the instructors who were responsible for their tuition.
