FREEZING EXPERIMENTS

DR, W. A. BOWIE'S PROCESS. TRIAL SHIPMENT THIS WEEK. A trial shipment of mutton, lamb and beef is being made from Gisborne this week on the Port Hunter under Dr. W. A. Bowie’s process of freezing. Arrangements in this coneetcion have been proceeding for some time, but little has been said publicly regarding it. A great deal of interest has been evoked in freezing circles, for if its success is proved beyond, all doubt it is likely to have far-reaching effects on the freezing industry of the Dominion. Details of the process are not being made known in the meantime, but an experiment on a substantial scale is now in train. Over 160 lambs and the same number of wethers were killed at the Kaiti wbrks on Saturday, everything being carried out under Dr. Bowie's plan. In addition, three bullocks were also slaughtered for tho same purpose ready for shipment by the Port Hunter. The Meat Board is interested in the process, and half of the shipment is being sent Home on its behalf by the Poverty Bay and East Coast Sheepowners Union, while the other half will be in charge of the Gisborne Refrigerating Co., Ltd. Mr J. Fraser, manager of the Meat Board, is going to Gisborne, and is to make an inspection of the carcases under the trial on Wednesday. AU available data is being collected concerning the carcases while in Gisborne, while, when they reach London, they will be under observation and undergo a series of tests right up to the time the meat appears on the dinner table.—“P.B. Herald.”
