AUCKLAND VICTORIOUS EVEN SCORING GAME. NINETEEN POINTS TO FOURTEEN [Special to “Tribune.”] Auckland, Aug. 22. Before a large attendance at Eden Park this afternoon, Auckland defeated the Hawke’s Bay representatives by 19 points to 14. Jamieson set the ball in motion, and was instrumental, with Solomon, in taking play to the Hawke’s Bay twenty-five, where Auckland pressed hard and were awarded a free kick, Davies having a shot, but failed badly. Campbell eased the pressure, and the forwards got going, but Setford and Smith sent play back to halfway. Jamieson and Maclndoe got going from here. Setford, however, took an excellent mark right under the Bay’s goal-posts, and once more play went to neutral none. A good kick by Jamieson sent operations to the visitors’ quarter mark, and play hovered in this area for some time till Yates sent a relieving kick, but Solomon was quickly on the job and gaining possession transferred to Sntherly, who went over. Corner added the extra points. Auckland 5 Hawke’s Bay 0 Hutchinson was responsible for another incursion into . the visitors’ territory, Yates, with a good line kick, eventually finding safety. An infringement by Knight rfave Cooke a chance, and he found the line beautifully within 10 yards of Auck land’s last line. The home vanguard eased the pressure a little. An infringement by a home forward in a dangerous position gave Yates a chance. He took the kick and put the visitors on the score sheet. Auckland 5 Hawke’s Bay 3 Good work by Grenside, Gemmell and Cooke had Auckland defending on their twenty-five. Knight dribbled to halfway, and from there Coy and Hutchinson made a sally, and the latter forced Yates to find tho line just inside his own quarter mark. Both packs were now working hard, and little advantage was gained by either side Howell and Cooke tested Davies, but he was equal to the occasion. The latter was responsible for an incursion to tho visitors’ area with a splendid kick. A series of line-outs followed, the advantage eventually resting with the visiting vanguard, which penetrated the home twenty-five. A nice movement by Setford, M. Howell, Cooke and E. Howell looked promising but tho latter knocked on. CORNER A STUMBLING BLOCK. The visiting forwards were bustling well, but found Corner a stumbling block. Offside plav by a home forward gave Yates another opportunity rrom the place where he was successful previously, but he failed. Up to this stage the visitors had failed to obtain possession on most occasions.

An interchange of kicks between Cooke, Davies, Grenside end Hutchinson ended up by play remaining at half-way. From here Steere, with a pretty dribbling solo, went well into the home team’s area, and Jamieson saved by getting in a “speculator” well on his own twenty-five. Batty, Knight and Campbell were responsible for easing the pressure and farther relief was obtained through McKay being offside. A series of scrums followed in mid-area which went in favour of Auckland, but the advantage was nullified by the inside backs, particularly Jamieson, failing to handle correctly. A sortie by Solomon, Corner, Knight and Jamieson was broken np by M. Howell intercepting, and he, with Grenside and Cooke made up lost ground. BAY FORWARDS DANGEROUS. The Bay forwards were now dangerous, but Anderson getting offside Solomon took the kick and Setford secured to send to Cooke, but Caughey smartly intercepted and set off for the line with only the fullback to beat. He streaked for the line, but Yates got him. He had, however, passed to Hutchinson. Yates was up in a trice and grabbed Hutchinson, but the latter struggled over near the corner. Corner failed with the kick.

On proceedings being resumed a series of scrums took place in midfield. Eventually McKay was caught offside, then Setford set his forwards on the attack again. Milliken was attempting to save but got into an offside position in a very dangerous area, and Yates again turned the kick to account and adding another three points to his side. Hawke’s Bay 9 Auckland 8 Matters had hardly been restarted when Yates fumbled badly and things looked bad for the visitors, but Cooke and Setford came to the relief and play evened up. The Hawke’s Bay vanguard, with Camnbell in the lead, made a determined onslaught, but once more Corner held them up. M. Howell got possession and sent matters to Auckland’s last line with a beautiful kick, but from a subsequent line-out Batty and Knight in concert broke away and took play to tho half-way mark. STRENUOUS WORK. Strenuous work now ensued between the two hard-working packs, neither side giving ground. Batty broke through, and with Hadley and Finlayson carried on right to the line, where Setford made a great save by getting possession and finding the line at the twenty-five. In this area Campbell got offside and Davies placed a nice goal from 12 yards outside the twenty-five and right on the side line.

Auckland 11 Hawke’s Bay 9 Hardly had things been moving again when from a set scrum near the Hawke’s Bay quarter mark the ball travelled along the Auckland rear line, every man handling nicely for Milliken to go over for a good try. Tho kick by Davies was charged down.

Ho then kicked well up in the air and Palmer got well under it and took it on the full and practically strolled over without opposition. Corner added the extra points. Auckland W Hawke’s Bay 9 At this stage play was held up temporarily owing to an Injury to Campbell, and Rolls replaced him. A spell of play, mostly line-outs in midfield, now took place. The Hawke's Bay forwards were now working with better cohesion, and Corner, in trying to stem the tide, was a patient for the ambulance men. He was soon up, however. Setford, M. Howell, Cooke, Grenside and Smith made a nice incision, but the latter knocaed on when the Auckland quarter mark was reached—a good opportunity spoilt, Anderson was responsible ioi taking play to Auckland’s line, when Setford tried to dive over, but Davies accounted for him. Setford got his rearguard, Howell, Cooke, Grenside and Smith, going, and a score looked certain, but the last-named was held up. Again from a scrum Setford tried to dive over, but lost the ball, and Auckland secured a force. Anderson, Steere and Wilson kept np a determined pressure, but Auckland’s defence was sound. Setford, M. Howell, Cooke and Grenside next had a sally, but Cooke, after a return pass, kicked too hard, snd Davies forced. Hawke’s Bay were now thrusting hard, the backs doing good work, and Auckland were all out on tho defence. The home side eventually got relief from a “speculator” bv Solomon, which found neutral ground Howell and Conke now combined, and the latter, with two nice “dummies” got to within ten yards of the Auckland line.
