ROSS SHIELD FINAL. HASTINGS DEFEAT CENTRAL H.B. The primary schools' Rugby representatives of Hastings and Central Hawke’s Bay met at the Hastings High School grounds on Saturday afternoon In the final of the Ross Shield competition. After an interesting game Hastings emerged the victors and wrested the shield by 8 points to 6. When the Central Hawke’s Bay team were weighed it was found that four boys exceeded the weight limit, Bst. Tibs., and consequently they were not eligible to play. The scoring was opened by Quinlivan, who followed up a kick through to score in a handy position for Collinge to convert. — Hastings 5, Central Hawke’s Bay 0. The visitors endeavoured to open up the play, but failed to display good combination, though they certainly showed better finish than the home side. When the forwards again took a hand there was a prolonged struggle before Quinlivan again crossed. This time the try went unconverted —Hastings 8, Central H.B. 0.

Within a minute Centra] Hawke’s Bay were attacking hotly and frequent came close to scoring. The backs were swinging into action nicely, and from a passing bout Abbott, son of ‘'Bunny” Abbott, an ex-All Black, who is coaching the team, scored near the corner The kick was unsuccessful, and shortly afterwards the interval was called with the score reading; Hastings 8, Central H B. 3. The second spell was more even than was anticipated for the visitors did not fulfil the promise shown in the opening half Hastings kept the play tight and succeeded in more than holding their own territorially. Towards the close of the game a well-placed cross-kick allowed Sullivan to collect in the open and dash over for n good try. which went unconverted. A few minutes later time was called with the score reading: Hastings 8 Central H.B 6 Mr W. O’Neill refereed.
