Hawke’s Bay Fails in Second Spell

(By Telegraph—Special to “The Tribune.”) Carterton, June 28. The Wairarapa representatives met Hawke’s Bay on the showground to-day. The weather was fine. There was an attendance of about 4000.

THE teams. The teams were:— WAIRARAPA. Full-back; L. Roach. Three-quarters : Fuller, Stringfellow, P. Jury,. Five-eighths: Corkill, R. Jury, Half: J. Mill. Forwards: J. Donald, McGregor, L. Willoughby, Fairbrother, Reside,, I. Harvey, Walker, Reid. HAWKE'S BAY. Full-back; Evans. Three-quarters; Grenside, McDonald, Mills. Five-eighths; Grant, Setford. Half; Lambie. Forwards.Dobson, Heffernan, McKay, Campbell , Roach, Harvey, Cairns. Wanoa. The referee, was Mr H. J. McKenzie. BAY WINS THE TOSS, Hawke’s Bay won the toss and Wairarapa kicked off against a fair breeze. From a scrum tho ball went to Jury, but the Bay stopped the movement.. Wairarapa moved into the Bay territory, but a tree kick to the visitors gave relief A free kick taken by Fuller from near half-way was charged down. Evans failed with a free kick, with the eon ditioris in his favour. Bay Hashed down on the right wing, and Aiilis scored a brilliant try near the coiner Evans failed to convert. Hawke’s Bay 3 Wairarapa 0 R. Jury stub-punted and found a gap, arid Stfingfellow nearly got over. A minute later J. Mill secured from a scrum and threw a long pass to Corkill, who snapped it up and went over to score. Fuller converted. Wairarapa 5 Hawke' Bay 3 Grenside tried to get through on the line, but was held up by Corkill. From a scrum J. Mill initiated a passing bout, which ended at Corkill, Mills making a determined tackle. McDonald made an attempt to pot, but failed. Dobson set the Bay going, and Grenside, who a minute before had been crowded out at the corner, scored. Evans failed to convert. Hawke’s Bay 6 Wairarapa H A dribbling rush by Wairarapa forwards saw them in the Bay twentyfive. A free kick gained a tremendous amount of ground for the visi tors. Corkill was doing some fine work at this period. Stringfellow and Fuller were associated tn a fiije movement, but the latter was crowded out. From a scrum near the Bay line, J. Mill dived over with an opponent hanging on to him, but was not awarded a try. Grenside, making good use of the wind, found the line well into Wairarapa territory. Stringfellow found the line witn a brilliant kick. Wairarapa were getting most of the ball. After Sti'ngfellow missed a hard pass, the Bay set up a passing bout which ended in Grenside being pushed out close to the objective. After a hard tussle, Mills scored near the coiner and Evans converted. Hawke’s Bay 11 Wairarapa . 5 Wairarapa set up a strong challenge, and a free kick saw Fuller send the ball nicely over the bar. Wairarapa took the lead for the first time when Fuller, who was in great form, sent Mill over. Wairarapa 22 Hawke’s Bay 19 With ten minutes to go, Bay made great efforts to pull the match out of the lire, and Fuller touched down under hard pressure. A fine line kick found Wairarapa 111 Bay territory where, after a strong offensive, P. Jury scored a try picking the ball up after J. Donald had dropped it. Fuller converted. Wairarapa 27 Hawke’s Bay 19 For an infringement Wairarapa was given a free kick, and Fuller, whose kicking had been magnificent during the whole game, added another three points, placing Wairarapa well in the lead. Grenside and Campbell were the outstanding Bay players. M’lls showed a fine turn of speed, which was very useful to the Bay in the first half. Both Bay wings wore badly starved in the second half. Heffernan and McKay were particularly good in the line-outs, and Lambie wa s a game half. Evans was sound, but he failed with some fairly easy kicks. For Wairarapa, Jimmy Mill, Corkill, Stringfellow and Roach were great backs, while all the forwards worked hard. J. IValker, a newcomer to the Wairarapa pack, earned his place. He and Reid provided Wairarapa with a fine pair of hookers.

Hastings.— Celtic kicked off with a strong breeze in their favour and continued to press hard until Keith bullocked his way over from a scrum near the line. Lewis converted nicely. Up and down play followed with the ball mostly in Hastings territory, but no further addition to the score was made when, the whistle blow for half-time. On changing over Hastings came on the attack and in a few minutes opened their score by way of a penalty, McNaughton’s kick going over from half way. Still pressing Hastings found themselves in Celtic’s territory, but were forced back to half way, where McNaughton was successful with another beautiful kick from half-way. Their next score came by way of Hutchison after a fino solo effort from near half way. McNaughton failed to convert. Celtic tried hard to even up tho score, but when the final whistle went it was still Celtic 5, Hastings 9. Mr W. Thurlow was referee. Waimarama v. Havelock Waimarama had the breeze with them and after a prolonged forward tussle were the first to open up the score, LGillies dashing over near the corner for an unconverted try. A spell of even plav followed, when the Natives pressed hard and August secured to score near the corner. The kick was unsuccessful. After the second spell, Havelock opened out and a few minutes after the whistle had blown Cooper kicked an easy penalty. Waimarama were penalised once again, but Cooper’s kick struck the bar. M. 8.0.8. 0. — The game between Pirates and Mariat saw play of an even nature in the first spell Early in the game Von Stunner secured the only try in the first spell. After changing over Marists made great efforts to score, but were repulsed, then towards the close of the game the superior combination of Pirates told its tale. Haynes crossed for a good try from a forward rush, then Von Sturmer secured from a passing bout to cross near the posts for Griffiths to convert. Mr. H. Kidson refereed. Napier 0.8. v. Clive— This was another very even game played on tfio No. 2 arena at McLean Park. The first spell was slightly in favour of Clive but after the change-over the Old Boys showed to better advantage. Smith scored the only try of the match early in the second half.—Mr. L Cleary was referee. Taradale v. Tech. Old Boys (A).— Played at Taradale before a good crowd the home side emerged the victors by six points to three. For Taradale Ellis kicked a penalty goal and scored a trj’ while Jordan scored a try for Old Boys. THIRD GRADE. HASTINGS SECTION. H. 5.0.8. defeated High School, 13 —3. Akina drew with Hastings—s all. NAPIER SECTION. Napier 0.8. (A) drew with Napier 0.8. (B). their being no score. Tech. 0.8. defeated Marist 0.8., 13—3. FOURTH GRADE. HASTINGS SECTION. Celtic defeated High School., 31— 0. Hastings defeated Havelock North, 49—0. M.A.C. defeated H. 5.0.8., 9 —o. NAPIER SECTION. Tech College (A) defeated Taradale. 11—0. Tech.
